The Five Bells stands proudly looking over the ever-changing view that is the Colne Valley in the pretty village of Colne Engaine.  The Village, situated at the top of the valley is only 3 miles from Halstead, 6 miles from Sudbury and 10 miles from Colchester making it readily accessible for dining out.

The building dates back over 500 years, and a record of the inn's landlords going back to 1579 is proudly displayed in the bar area.

The recently refurbished interior retains lovely features such as the original exposed timbers and is tastefully decorated and furnished; outside, a lovely terrace commands stunning views over the Colne Valley.

Owners Darran & Caroline Lingley are happy to uphold the inn's long and fine tradition of hospitality, quality and service.  Affable hosts, they and their friendly staff make all their guests feel most welcome.

Open 12 – 3pm and 6pm – 11pm Monday to Thursday and all day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, there’s a choice of at least four cask-conditioned real ales available at this Free House, together with four draught lagers, Guinness, Aspells cider and a good range of wines, spirits and soft drinks.

The menu is a happy mix of English modern food with traditional values, and makes use of only the freshest ingredients and local produce.  All food is home-cooked and freshly prepared, including the delicious breads.  Meat and fish are cured and or smoked on the premises, and the menu always contains vegetarian dishes.  Guests choose to dine in the bar, restaurant or dependant on weather the outside terrace or courtyard dining areas.

Entertainment in the form of Jazz on Sunday and Live Bands on Fridays is both popular and free.

Food is available between midday and 2pm and 6.30pm and 9.30pm every day, lunch extended 12 to 3pm on Sundays

The dining room seats 70 (booking advised at weekends), while upstairs there’s a newly refurbished coffee lounge.  For a real taste of old-world charm, great food, drink and genuine hospitality, look no further.
