It was a dry but grey day for the Barrel Hunters as they assembled at the Five Bells in Colne Engaine for the 12th Charity Barrel Hunt being organised by Darran and Caroline Lingley, the Landlord and Landlady.
Registration was between 11am and 12 noon with the entry fees all going to Essex Air Ambulance.
All the competitors followed a set route of approximately one and a half miles for the Family and under 12 route and 3 miles for the Adult champion’s route.
On each route three large barrels are hidden for the adults and three small barrels are hidden for the family and under 12’s; each barrel attracting a prize when it is returned to the Five Bells.
In addition, the first Barrel back in each group also wins the Trophy for the year and has their name engraved on the winners shield.
12 noon signalled the start of the Hunt and about 170 men, women and children charged into the North Essex countryside in a bid to be the first back with a barrel.
